Disabling Zotero

If you have Zotero (a free reference management programme) on your PC you may find that when you try to export references to you EndNote library they automatically go into Zotero instead. To stop this from happening you will need to temporarily disable the Zotero plugin by following the steps below:

Firefox

  • From the Tools menu select Add-ons
  • Find the Zotero entry and click the Disable button.
  • Close the Add-ons window down

Note: you may need to restart your browser to activate these changes.

Internet Explorer

  • From the Tools menu and select Manage Add-ons
  • Select Enable or Disable Add-ons...
  • Click on the Zotero entry
  • Under Settings click Disable
  • Click on OK.

  • Zotero is not on IE, so I don't know why you posted instructions for IE.

Furthermore, there's no reason to disable it in Firefox.

Click the gear icon & select "Preferences..." Under the "General tab," unselect "Use Zotero for downloaded RIS/Refer files."

You can now use EndNote (or some other desktop reference manager) to download RIS/Refer & still use Zotero.

  • Is it possible to use Zotero with Internet Explorer? www.zotero.org doesn't list it as a supported browser.

  • This blog tries to post suggestions that are of general use to a wide range of people. In this instance, existing Zotero users would be aware that the software only runs with Firefox, but the additional instructions for IE make the post applicable to a wider audience.

Thanks for the suggestion of an alternative way around this problem – I’m sure other users will find this helpful.

  • Zotero is only available to use with Firefox. I'm sorry if the IE instructions were misleading - they were simply there as extra information to make the post useful to a wider audience.
