Creating a list of references without inserting citations

If you have already inserted citations into your assignment manually, you can still use EndNote to create a list of references at the end of your document. Simply follow the steps below:

  • Make sure that you can view your EndNote Library and Word on screen at the same time by resizing the windows.
  • Check that the correct output style is selected in EndNote.
  • Highlight the references that you want to include in your bibliography. (Use the Ctrl key to select multiple references.)
  • Hold down the Ctrl key and drag the references into your Word document.

Your bibliography will automatically be formatted using your chosen style.

Note: Select your references carefully as you cannot go back and add extra references without starting the whole process from scratch.

Creating independent bibliographies

It is possible to create a bibliography in Word without linking this to any in-text citations. To do this:

  • Open Word and EndNote in separate windows that are viewable at the same time.
  • Highlight the selection of references in EndNote that you want to include in the bibliography (you may need to use the Ctrl key to do this).
  • Hold down the Ctrl key and drag and drop the references into Word.
After a small delay your bibliography will appear in Word.

Note: You need to make sure that you move all your references across at the same time. If you try and add extra references at a later stage they will display at the end of the list, rather than alphabetically.
