Using EndNote with Microsoft Office 2007

You may be aware that IT Services are currently working to install Microsoft Office 2007 across the University network. This will result in some changes to the way EndNote works in Word. The most obvious difference is the way that the toolbar displays.

A workbook is now available from the Library's EndNote webpages which will show you how to use the main features of EndNote in Word 2007.

Entering a company name as an author

If you enter a company name which has a comma in it as an author in EndNote you may find that it does not display properly when you come to format your list of references.

E.g. American Advertising Federation, Inc. will display as American Advertising Federation, I.

In order to get round this problem you simply need to add an extra comma in the EndNote author field, as below:

American Advertising Federation,, Inc.

This double comma will now make the reference display correctly in your list of references.

Direct Export isn't working

If you find that the Export option isn't working in a database when you try to put references into your EndNote library, try clearing the Cache in your web browser, as you may be storing a cached version of the webpage. Simply follow the steps below:

Internet Explorer

  • Go to Tools and select Internet Options
  • Make sure the General tab is displayed
  • Under the section Temporary Internet Files click Delete Files then OK


  • Go to Tools > Options
  • Click on the Privacy button
  • Next to the Cache option click Clear, then OK

Setting EndNote to automatically open when you open Word

It is possible to set EndNote to automatically open and close when you open or close a Word document. If you want to do this simply follow the steps below:

  • In Word click on Tools > EndNote X1 > Cite While You Write Preferences
  • Select the options Open EndNote when starting Word and Close EndNote when leaving Word
  • Click on OK

Note: The instructions above are for Word 2003, if you are using Word 2007 then the steps are slightly different:

  • Click on the EndNote tab
  • Select Preferences
  • Select the options Open EndNote when starting Word and Close EndNote when leaving Word
  • Click on OK

Using the Personal Communication reference type with CU Harvard

The Personal Communication reference type in EndNote can be used to create references for information gained by letter, email or telephone call. You will need to complete the following fields, depending on the type of communication:

A letter

An email
Author-Year-Author Address-Title-Type-Recipient-Date

A telephone conversation

Note: If you need to make any small alterations to the reference that is generated, wait until you have finished your document and removed the field codes. You will then be able to make any amendments in the text and resave the document.
