Checking access to full text journal articles

It is possible to set up EndNote so that it can check if we have access to a journal article electronically. To turn this function on, follow the steps below.

  • Within EndNote go to Edit > Preferences…
  • From the menu on the left select URLs & Links
  • Tick the box next to Enable OpenURL
  • In the box OpenUrl Path replace the existing URL with http://193.61.107.24:9003/coventry
  • Click OK
  • Select one of the journal references in your library by clicking on it
  • Right click and from the menu select URL > OpenURL Link
  • An SFX window will open to tell you if we have access to the article electronically. If we do, simply follow the links in the usual way.

Note: This feature will only check electronic journals, it will not check whether books or printed journals are available.

Importing references from the Library Catalogue

It is now possible to import references from the Library Catalogue into an EndNote Web account and then transfer them into your main EndNote library. Instructions on how to set up an EndNote Web account, import references from the Library Catalogue and transfer them into an EndNote desktop library can be found in the EndNote Web workbook.

(Hopefully it may soon be possible to import references directly into an EndNote desktop library.)

Missing menu commands

Sometimes some of the basic menu commands in EndNoteX1 e.g. File>Import, References>New Reference are greyed out and unavailable. This is usually because the Groups part of the screen is highlighted. Simply come out of the menu and click anywhere in the right hand References part of the screen and then re-open the menu. The command should now be active.
