EndNote error in Word

If you encounter an EndNote error message "The specified Word library cannot be unloaded because it is in use." when opening Word documents you need to follow the steps below:

  • In Word go to Help > About Microsoft Office Word
  • Select Disabled items…
  • Select EndNote and click OK
  • If prompted, allow the files to be loaded into Word
  • Close Word and re-open

The EndNote toolbar should now appear within Word and the error message should not reoccur.

Note: The instructions above are for Word 2003/2003/2000. If you are using Word 2007 the steps will differ slightly:

  • Click on the Office Icon and select Word Options
  • Click on Add-ins
  • Change the Manage options to Disabled Items
  • Click Go
  • Highlight any EndNote items that are displayed and click Enable
  • Click Close and then OK.
  • If prompted, allow the files to be loaded into Word
  • Close Word and re-open

Importing references from the Library Catalogue

It is now possible to import references from the Library Catalogue into an EndNote Web account and then transfer them into your main EndNote library. Instructions on how to set up an EndNote Web account, import references from the Library Catalogue and transfer them into an EndNote desktop library can be found in the EndNote Web workbook.

(Hopefully it may soon be possible to import references directly into an EndNote desktop library.)

Transferring references with file attachments between EndNote and EndNote Web

There is currently a problem which means that if you try and transfer a reference that has a file attachment from an EndNote desktop library to your EndNote Web account and then back again, the file attachment will be lost.
EndNote are working to solve this, but for the moment it is best to avoid transferring references with attachments.

Moving references between EndNote Web and EndNote X

Although the Transfer References option is still not available in EndNote X, there is another way to transfer references between the two programs:
  1. Open your EndNote X library.
  2. Use the drop-down menu to change the output style to RefMan (RIS) Export. (You will need to choose Select Another Style to view the full list of available styles.)
  3. Go to File > Export.
  4. Give your file a name and save it in the normal way. (Make sure that it is saving as a text (.txt) file.)
  5. Open your EndNote Web library.
  6. Select Import from the menu on the left of the screen.
  7. Use the Browse button to find the file you have just saved.
  8. Use the drop-down menu to select the import filter RefMan (RIS).
  9. Click on Import.
  10. The references will be put into the Unfiled folder. You can then move them to any other folder within your library.

Note: You can also transfer references from EndNote Web to EndNote X using a similar process. Use the Export option within EndNote Web, choosing the style RefMan (RIS) Export to save the references; then Import the file into EndNote X, using the Import Filter Reference Manager (RIS).

EndNote Web workbook

It is now possible to access a simplified version of EndNote to use from off-campus, as long as you have access to the Internet.

A workbook is available from the Library website (http://www.coventry.ac.uk/endnote) to help you get started using EndNote Web.

Please Note: The Coventry University Harvard Style is not available within EndNote Web. You will need to bring the final version of your Word document onto campus and use the main software to format your bibliography if you need to use the Coventry style.
